Greetings and welcome to Southwest Minnesota State University!

SMSU has been committed to creating a vibrant learning environment since we first opened our doors nearly 50 years ago. We challenge our students to explore new ideas; we encourage our students to dream big and set high goals; and we give our students the skills to achieve meet the complex challenges of this century.

What does this mean for our graduates? It means success! Our graduates have the highest employment rates in the MnSCU system and our graduates are accepted to some of the finest graduate schools in the country (99% are employed or in graduate school as reported by the class of 2011); our alumni giving rate is the highest of any public institution in Minnesota; our faculty and staff giving rate is among the highest in the system; and our student athletes have been recognized by the NCAA with the Civic Engagement Award.

We have been recognized for affordability, value and excellence by a number of organizations just in the past year:

  • SMSU was honored as a top college for teacher education in the Online College Database's ranking, "Top Colleges in Minnesota Shaping the Next Generation." The list recognizes the post-secondary institutions in the state that graduated the most education and teaching professionals in 2012.
  • SMSU was ranked fifth among institutions in the state for affordable online degree programs by AC Online.
  • SMSU was the highest-ranked four-year Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU) institution for Best Lifetime Return on Investment by AC Online.
  • SMSU was one of 12 institutions in Minnesota to earn the “20-30 Club” designation by The College Database, which recognized SMSU for having an annual tuition rate below $20,000 and new graduates who earn more than $30,000 annually.

How do we do this? We focus our efforts on three key themes: academic excellence and distinctiveness; student learning and success; and meaningful partnerships and engagement. We transform the lives of our students and enhance their educational experiences.

I invite you to explore our academic programs; learn more about how our students are making a difference at the University and in the community; read about the exciting accomplishments of our students, faculty and alumni; and discover why SMSU is where you belong.

Warm Regards,
