College Resources

Withdrawing and Dropping a Course:

There is a fine line between withdrawing and dropping a course. The differences between withdrawing and dropping is that when you withdraw from a course before the drop/add period; it will enable a student to withdraw from that class without effecting their transcript, GPA, etc. However, it will affect a student’s Completion Rate if he/she does not complete 66.6% of the course they had registered for during that semester. When you withdraw from a course after the drop/add period, it will receive a “W” as your grade on your transcript. For further information look at the SMSU Student Handbook. Any questions/concerns please contact the Registration Office at registration@smsu.edu Or the AOS office at Jefferson.Lee@SMSU.edu.

Grades of Transcript:

Further Information can be found on (SMSU Policy A-034).

All courses are graded according to the SMSU systems which can be found in the Student Handbook.

The first system is the A, B, C, D, and F system:

  • A - Excellent
  • B - Above Average
  • C - Average
  • D - Below Average
  • F - Failure

The second system is the AU, W, I, IP, NA, NC and FQ. This second grading system can affect a student’s GPA and completion rate on their transcript.

  • AU - Audited
  • W - Withdrawn
    • I- Incomplete
  • IP- In-Progress
  • NA- Never Attended
  • FQ- Failed Quit
  • NC- Credit/No Credit System

Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP):

Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP) is a program that targets undergraduate students work on research projects on a graduate level. Many colleges all over the country now offer SROP. Each and every single college has their own rules and regulations. SROP will be anywhere from 8 to 10 weeks where students will be required to stay on a college campus. Students can apply online, but before applying, students should talk to their advisor. If any questions or concerns please feel free to contact the Registration Office, registration@smsu.edu or AOS/ODI office, Jay.Lee@SMSU.edu.

Paid Internships for Students of Color through the Citizen's League

Greetings,

We’re looking for college students of color—at least in their second year—to apply for a paid internship with the 2017 Minnesota Capitol Pathways Internship program administered by the Citizens League. Learn more about the program and access the online application here: https://citizensleague.org/projects/minnesota-capitol-pathways/

Deadline from September 30 to October 16

Although the work would be in the metropolitan area, we have had students commute before and we do not want to limit students based on geography.

Program Information:

This internship program has been created with the understanding that, to build a strong state, Minnesota government and the people who run it must be representative of the diversity of the state. Unfortunately, people of color are largely absent from legislative decision making in Minnesota today, a fact which is stubbornly slow to change even as the state’s population becomes ever more diverse.

With the long-term goal of making our government truly representative of our communities, the program seeks to open access to the Minnesota Capitol to the next generation of leaders of color. Through this program, interns will build relationships with established capitol leaders (non-partisan staff, lobbyists, Republican/Democrat elected leaders), gain exposure to various kinds of careers in policy, and get real-world experience in career fields they would like to learn more about – and build a strong professional resume in the process.

In the program, student interns will:

  • Be matched with a host site working at the legislature for the 2017 session. (matches will be made based on the application and interview process)
  • Work at their internship for a minimum of 10 hours per week throughout the session
  • Get paid a minimum of $12/hour. (Some host sites have elected to pay more.)
  • Attend regular cohort meetings (one Friday/month) with their colleagues in the program for networking and skill-building sessions. Topics may include subjects such as how the legislature works, public speaking, networking, applying for jobs, and others. Interns will also be introduced to young and established leaders in Minnesota politics.

Important dates:

  • August 5 – September 30 October 16 – extended!: Student application open/close date
  • August 12 – September 30 October 16- extended!: Host application open date/close date
