Withdrawing and Dropping a Course:
There is a fine line between withdrawing and dropping a course. The differences between withdrawing and dropping are that when you withdraw from a course before the drop/add period, it will enable a student to withdraw from that class without affecting their transcript, GPA, etc. However, it will affect a student’s Completion Rate if he/she does not complete at least 66.6% of the course they registered for during that semester. When you withdraw from a course after the drop/add period, you will receive a “W” as your grade on your transcript. For further information, look at the SMSU Student Handbook. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Registration Office at registration@smsu.edu or the AOS office at Jefferson.Lee@SMSU.edu.
Grades of Transcript:
Further Information can be found on (SMSU Policy A-034).
All courses are graded according to the SMSU system, as outlined in the Student Handbook.
The first system is the A, B, C, D, and F system:
- A - Excellent
- B - Above Average
- C - Average
- D - Below Average
- F - Failure
The second system is the AU, W, I, IP, NA, NC and FQ. This second grading system can affect a student’s GPA and completion rate on their transcript.
- AU - Audited
- W - Withdrawn
- I- Incomplete
- IP- In-Progress
- NA- Never Attended
- FQ- Failed Quit
- NC- Credit/No Credit System
Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP):
The Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP) is a program that targets undergraduate students to work on research projects at a graduate level. Many colleges all over the country now offer SROP. Each college has its own rules and regulations. SROP will last anywhere from 8 to 10 weeks, during which students will be required to stay on a college campus. Students can apply online, but before doing so, they should consult with their advisor. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the Registration Office at registration@smsu.edu or the AOS/ODI office at Jay.Lee@SMSU.edu.
Paid Internships for Students of Color through the Citizens' League
Greetings,
We’re seeking college students of color, preferably in their second year, to apply for a paid internship with the Minnesota Capitol Pathways Internship program, administered by the Citizens League. Learn more about the program and access the online application here:
Minnesota Capitol Pathways
Deadline from September 30 to October 16
Although the work would be in the metropolitan area, we have had students commute before, and we do not want to limit students based on geography.
Program Information:
This internship program has been created with the understanding that, to build a strong state, the Minnesota government and the people who run it must be representative of the state's diversity. Unfortunately, people of color are largely absent from legislative decision-making in Minnesota today, a fact which is stubbornly slow to change even as the state’s population becomes ever more diverse.
With the long-term goal of making our government truly representative of our communities, the program seeks to open access to the Minnesota Capitol to the next generation of leaders of color. Through this program, interns will build relationships with established capitol leaders (non-partisan staff, lobbyists, Republican/Democrat elected leaders), gain exposure to various kinds of careers in policy, and get real-world experience in career fields they would like to learn more about – and build a strong professional resume in the process.
In the program, student interns will:
- Be matched with a host site working at the legislature. (Matches will be made based on the application and interview process)
- Work at their internship for a minimum of 10 hours per week throughout the session
- Earn a minimum of $12 per hour. (Some host sites have elected to pay more.)
- Attend regular cohort meetings (one Friday per month) with their colleagues in the program for networking and skill-building sessions. Topics may include subjects such as how the legislative process works, public speaking, networking, job application, and others. Interns will also be introduced to young and established leaders in Minnesota politics.
