Upward Bound – Graduate Assistant

Position Purpose

The Graduate Assistant supports the upward bound program by assisting with student success initiatives, educational activities, tutoring, college preparation, and program events. 

Salary & Appointment

Position appointed on an annual basis for August-May. Annual stipend of $8,000 paid on a bi-weekly basis and a tuition waiver for SMSU graduate classes.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

• A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and admission and enrollment in a graduate program at SMSU.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
• Must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or above throughout the time of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience mentoring or working with youth development programs.
• Experience working with culturally diverse populations.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and student database systems.

Responsibilities

• Assist with event planning activities during the academic year.
• Assist students with goal setting, study skills, time management, and college preparation.
• Support logistics for college visits and educational activities.
• Attend evening, overnight, and occasional weekend events as required.
• Assist with student data collection.
• Assist with creating newsletters, social media content, and program communications.
• Assist with the after-school tutoring program.

Clientele

Low-income and first-generation high school students from Marshall, YME, and Worthington High Schools.

Supervision

Marly Wagner

The graduate assistant will help supervise Upward Bound tutors and oversee Upward Bound students' activities.
