English Course Placement

Follow the steps below to place students into the appropriate English course.

STEP 1:

Any of the following minimum scores may place a student into ENG 151: Academic Writing.

  • COURSE CODE: ENG 151
  • ACT English: 18 or above
  • SAT Writing: 480 or above
  • Accuplacer Next Gen Reading: 250 or above
  • Accuplacer Reading: 78
  • Accuplacer Sentence Skill: 86
  • Accuplacer ESL WritePlacer: 6

OR

STEP 2:

If a student’s cumulative High School GPA is a 2.50 or above, any of the following scores will place a student into ENG 151: Academic Writing.

  • COURSE CODE: ENG 151
  • ACT English: 16-17
  • SAT Writing: 440-479
  • Accuplacer Next Gen Reading: 236-249

OR

STEP 3:

Anyone who does not fall into one of the two above categories should take ENG 099.

If a student has no scores for placement purposes, students with a cumulative High School GPA of 2.60, in consultation with their advisor, may be placed into English 151.


Validation period

The period the entrance exam score, high school GPA, and acceptable placement score is valid for purposes of course placement.

  • SAT, ACT, MCA: 5 calendar years
  • High School GPA: 10 calendar years
  • ACCUPLACER Reading: 5 calendar years
