Music in Lakota Culture

The Music Program welcomes musician and drum maker, Leo Gunner Baker, to SMSU to share information about the nature and use of Music in Lakota culture.  

This seminar is designed to help attendees:

1. recognize authentic music of this culture;
2. understand how music is woven into Lakota culture;
3. realize how context guides music choices;
4. select music and/or musical activites that can be used in the classroom to help students gain insight into authentic Lakota music; and 
5. understand authentic drum making practice.

This seminar is offered free of charge to all music educators and music education students.  The registration link will be made live in late November or early December of 2026.
